MAXIS OM NOM NOM RACE – DANCING FISH

BEHOLD!!!! The final destination! *insert suspense song*. We are SO close to the ending of the race, we  can smell it! Can’t wait for the race to end and for the organizers to announce the results!! The guys are in serious desperation, and in need for a new replacement for their prehistoric mobile phones. THE HEAT IS ON! Everyone of us feel like A-team, full of action and always on the run!

One by one getting stressed, but still in high spirits and enthusiasm

Final destination – DANCING FISH RESTAURANT
Finally! A fine dining restaurant with a super cozy and air-conditioned atmosphere. Perfect restaurant to finish the finale of the race! Woah man…. Restaurant fine dancing concept that serves Malaysian and Indonese delicacies, with jazz music as the background. Chill out stylo milo.


RICE – Nasi putih and nasi kunyit. The rice served is flufy, and the nasi kunyit is especially fragrant… goes well together 


AYAM PANGGANG – Roasted chicken with black sauce. Chicken was nicely roasted, and the black sauce nicely caramelized and coated on the chicken. Great dish to go with your nasi-nasi!


DANCING FISH – Look at that! Looks like the fish dancing…like, danced into a big pot of hot oil to be fried and be finally served to us…haha! Check out that colour, fried to perfection! The fish is super crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. Deep fried to the point that you can eat the bone like eating muruku. The presentation itself is a wonder piece of conversation.


ICE-CREAM – Strawberry and durian ice cream. The strawberry ice cream is sweet and slightly sour, just like real strawberries. Same goes for the durian.. quite smooth actually and not too strong.




LEMONGRASS JELLY WITH SOUR PLUM BURST – The name sounds so yeng wei…this dessert is sumthing new to us. The jelly has a tangy fruity flavor that melts in your mouth. The sour plum balls explodes in your mouth, giving a delightful burst of flavours that mixes well with the jelly. We want more please!

MAXIS OM NOM NOM RACE – THAI BASE RESTAURANT, BANDAR SRI DAMANSARA

Awwwwwww Yeah! Finished a hearty meal of satay, and now, Boom Boom Pau is ready for the next destination! We’re still ‘filling’ energized.

4th Destination – THAI BASE RESTAURANT


AaRRGGGH! FINALLY! Thai food on the go babeh! Izzit just us, or we think the food is getting spicier and spicier as we get near to completion? =.= Thai Base Restaurant is located in Bandar Sri Damansara, and this the first time we’ve heard of this place. The ambience here is kinda Thai-Oriental style wei…


THAI-STYLE CHICKEN RICE – Wah lau… spiciest dish we tasted so far. Generous servings of chicken in spicy gravy served with fragrant rice. Shi En the professional food-taster said it has turmeric, lemon grass, dried chilli, long beans, serai leaves, with a hint of zesty lime. THAT is Thailand on a plate!


PORTUGESE STYLE GRILLED SEAFOOD – My goodness we enjoyed this dish so much we almost forgot our drivers’ name. Prawns are huge, succulent, and fresh. Served with ladies finger, the sauce that accompanies this dish is slightly spicy and rich. Hey! The Melaka boys said that this dish reminds them of the seafood in Portugese Settlement wei. “All these food makes me miss Melaka so much”.


HAILAM MEE – The noodles are MIND BLASTING *imitates Russell Peters*! It has a very springy consistency, not over-cooked, just the way we like it. Surprisingly the sauce is a little sweet and savoury at the same time… not too thick as well. Garnished with crispy fried shallots. We believe a good noodle meal consists of the perfect marriage of the noodle and the sauce… and this dish definitely already married for many years and lived happily ever after. OK we’re exaggerating, but you get the point.


DESSERTS – Assortments of durian cake, tartlet, custard puff and agar-agar pudding. We especially love durian cake… VERY soft, light, and, melt-in-your-mouth texture, with a generous layer of durian cream. Love this to the maximum limit! We asked if we can tapau the durian cake, but the waiter jokingly said will deduct points from our team =.=! Not  cool!

MAXIS OM NOM NOM RACE – SATE KAJANG HJ. SAMURI

Deng!! What a day it has been so far! After running around trying to compete with the teams, we feel slightly exhausted, but still thinking positive and not giving up! Power of positive thinking yo!!
Boom Boom Pau: We filling good!
So far the race is awesome…  the places we need to visit serves yummy foods, giving us a taste of the cullinary adventure we will be experience throughout the joruney.

Yong braked hard that Erica fell and almost got trapped under the driver’s seat, but still remained cool

Next stop: SATE KAJANG HAJI SAMURI
We were greeted by the sights of other tired bloggers feasting their @$$ off. Upon arrival, we went upstairs and head striaght first for the sirap ais… very much needed thirst quencher since all of us nearly lost our bodily fluids. Erica was so thirsty she finished the whole glass in one gulp.
Ambience here is very typical Malay type, no fancy pansy pretentious decorations… simple and rustic, not intimidating. Come to think of it, why go all the way to Kajang when they have a good satay restaurant just in Petaling Jaya area?



KAJANG SATAY – A variety of spiced meat consisting of chicken, beef, mutton, and venison. Meaty, slightly sweet, and not too over-spiced to cover the taste of the meat. Damn tasty kajang satay = reward for our blood, sweat, and tears… Lolz!

 

PEANUT SAUCE – Peanut awesome-sauce! Sate Kajang Hj. Samsuri is well-knowned for their satay sauce…. Rich in peanut flavour, not oily, and we kinda think it’s quite creamy as well! Comes together with a separate bowl of sambal for those who wants to add an extra dash of spiciness in the sauce.
















NASI IMPIT – The alternative version of ketupat. More fragrant, moist and fluffy compared to the standard ketupat that is always served everytime.

MAXIS OM NOM NOM RACE – TARBUSH RESTAURANT SUNWAY
Second stop y’all! This time the journey was much smoother than the first one, since Yong kinda know the area. The team is already quite emotional dy since we arrive quite late leh. Looks like Donn is suffering a mild heart attack (takut separuh mati): kena saman by DBKL, Yong’s crazy driving, and his leg got almost pancaked by his own car.
On second thought, let’s talk about the consequences of Yong’s driving so far:
Brake pads almost gone,
Tyres close to blowing up,
Bumpers nearly flew away,
Suspensions 10 degrees more to bursting into flames,
Whole team - near-death experience ala Final Destination 4


Anyway, the next stop brings the team to TARBUSH SUNWAY PYRAMID! YESSS!!!! We ate before at Tarbush Bukit Bintang area, but we didn’t know they have a branch in Sunway Pyramid.
Tarbush is well known for their top notch Lebanese cuisine. Donn said that a taxi-driver once told him whenever Middle Eastern tourist visits Malaysia, they always choose to dine in Tarbush. Goes to show how famous this place is.
We love the ambience here... feels like Boom Boom Pau was invited into a Sheikh’s palace... damn royal wei!
Biryani Prawn – Hearty rice dish, spied with turmeric and topped with prawns... looks colourful too! The gravy that comes with it has a flavourful ‘prawny’ taste to it. We love the ‘Shatta’ that comes together... Shatta is like the Middle East version of Malaysian sambal, but tasted more ‘refreshing’ and gives more live to this dish.
Muttabal – Looks like hummus! Makes a great dip for the pita bread that comes with it. Tastes like a more savoury version of the usual hummus we always eat. Very fluffy and smooth... and would make a nice dip for anything else we think!
Creme caramel – Didn’t know that Middle East cuisine offer crème caramel in their course. Another pleasant delight to finish a heavy meal! Caramel tasted home-made, and the pudding is really bouncy, giving a nice sensation chewing it. We love the fact that it’s not too sweet.

Verdict: Authentic Lebanese cuisine right at our doorsteps worth dining at. Will definitely come back for more to savour the rest of the servings. Cosy ‘palace-like’ ambience as well.

MAXIS OM NOM NOM RACE – STRAWBERRY FIELDS CAFE, PJ

Looks like the team has finally arrived at Mystery Venue A! *phew*
Team Boom Boom Pau (the so-called demi-gods of Greek) has finally at our first destination of The Maxis Om Nom Nom Race which is at Kafe Strawberry Fields, Petaling Jaya branch. The team is served teppan yaki chikien rice, asam fish rice, sago gula Melaka... much needed after the frustration of Donn screwing up Yong Hsin and Shi En for their lousy location-finding skills. Erica knows how to keep her cool though. On top of that, Donn almost lost a leg bcoz Yong Hsin reversed the damn car into his sneakers. =.=!
We arrived at the first destination around 11.30a.m plus, much to our excitement.
Asam Fish Rice – the dish is plentiful with lady’s finger, and a generous amount of mildly spicy and sweet asam sauce. The fish is delicate and nicely cooked, and the sauce compliments the texture of the fish. We love how the rice is served... squary, like SpongeBob SquarePants. Would recommend this awesome this to those who loves a twist on their regular fish dishes.
Tepanyaki Chicken Rice – Comes with a hearty helping of succulent chicken, and some fried bean sprouts. This was by far our personal favourite!! Chicken is like... so tender, with a slight kick of teppanyaki and black pepper seasoning. Tauge was quite crunchy, not like most of the soggy tauges we eat at other restaurants.
Sago Gula Melaka – The three Melaka boys agreed that the ‘gula Melaka’ that they use for this dessert is as authentic as it gets. The sago seats were really soft, and the mixture of the santan and gula Melaka reminds Donn, Yong Hsin, and Shi En of... thie hometown Melaka’s cendol! Absolutely simple, rustic, and a nice finishing to our first meal for the day! HELL YEAH!! Om nom nom!

Don’t just take our word for it... this restaurant has been feature in The Star newspaper.... don’t play play!

One Step Closer to the Maxis Om Nom Nom Race

Pass me my friggin' utensils and gimme a "HELL YEAH"!


Few days ago Kochi called me and asked me to participate in a 'race' organized by Nuffnang and Maxis, called the "Maxis Om Nom Nom Race".
Basically the concept of this race is like... you know, Amazing Race + Jalan Jalan Cari Makan. Or to put it my way; Asian Food Channel  and AXN channel combined into an adventure! Woot!
Food has been always close to our hearts, and the 3 of us, coming from Melaka are always adventurous when it comes to trying food when we started studying and working in KL, so this race is like... the ultimate getaway for us in our non-happening daily lives.


I believe the main motivation for them to enter this race is to win the awesome prizes;  A trip to Hong Kong 3 days 2 nights with 5-star accommodation (for the winning team members of 4 pax) worth RM10,000, and also 4x HTC Desire Z (1 per winning member)
I, personally, have always dreamed of becoming the next Anthony Bourdain of Malaysia ever since I started watching AFC, so participating this challenge is most probably the closest I can get to achieve my near-impossible culinary dream!
I could use a brand new phone too... still stuck with my Nokia N70 =.=


Anyway, the race starts this Saturday (15th January), from Modesto, CapSquare, and ends at the same place. The challenge will involve the iPhone 4, the Finder301 application and Wireless Broadband, all available through Maxis. Luckily we have a geek called Yong Hsin, who I think knows how to use these technology stuffs.

Introducing the team members!!
















Shi En - Or commonly referred to as 'Ko Chi'. This guy is the cool dude in our gang. He is the only friend I know that have the most in common with me; good food, rock and roll at least. I definitely MUST have this guy in the team... because we know we're gonna have one hell of a gastronomy adventure.






















Yong Hsin - a.k.a Yong; I suspect he will be the noisiest throughout the whole challenge, but I honestly think he will make our adventure more fun, and provide something useful. Also loves eating... especially pork. 






















Erica Ting - All 3 of the guys are from Melaka, except Erica, who is from Penang. She's the rose among the thorn, and the equivalent of Fergie from Black Eyed Peas in our team. Coming from the food paradise of Malaysia and having been invited to many food reviews, her contribution towards the team will be LEGEN...wait for it....oh there it is... DARY! Plus, her good looks combined with mine will make the rest of team members look less ugly. (Ahaha... just kidding guys...please don't kick me from the team)

















Donovan Lim - It's-a-me! Sole purpose: Mad driver (the picture says it all) . I don't wanna talk too much bout myself, but I'll definitely will contribute at least a thing or two and entertain the team should they feel demotivated. I'm the driver, so they can't freaking complain yo!


Behold! The four of us have been chosen by the Gods of Rock to form a sensational rock and roll band that was predicted to surpass even the legendary Guns and Roses, but because of work commitments, we decided to use our powers to help society, like participating the Maxis Om Nom Nom Race.

Three guys, one girl, all from the two most powerful food kingdoms of Malaysia; Melaka and Penang.
We are the Greek demi-gods and this challenge is the Olympics...we ARE destined for this!

Anyway, jokes apart, we still haven't come up with our team name. Some lame suggestions by me:
- Boom Boom Pau (Motto: We have fillings)
- Buns and Roses (the guys have the buns, Erica has the roses)
- Cendol Crew FTW (Melaka and Penang famous for cendols mah)

So PLEASE guys from Nuffnang and Maxis and everyone, count us in!
Ye shall prepare me my M-sized garment!
